Frequently asked questions

Got questions? We’ve got answers. Here’s everything you need to know about getting your ITIN with MyITINPro.

What is an ITIN and who needs it?

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a nine-digit tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to individuals who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but are not eligible to obtain a Social Security Number (SSN). ITINs are used exclusively for federal tax reporting and do not authorize work in the U.S., nor do they qualify individuals for Social Security benefits or the Earned Income Tax Credit. You need an ITIN if you’re a non-U.S. citizen with a U.S. tax filing requirement but aren’t eligible for an SSN—for example, non-resident aliens earning U.S. income, U.S. residents without SSNs, or dependents and spouses of U.S. taxpayers.

We offer a 100% refund policy for ITIN applications. Our success rate is 100%, and we’re confident in delivering results. In the rare case we’re unable to get your ITIN, you’ll receive a full refund—no questions asked, no extra steps.

Note: This refund policy is part of MyITINPro’s service guarantee; no external source applies.

Yes, you can apply for an ITIN without having a U.S. company or EIN. ITINs are issued for various reasons, including reporting income earned in the U.S. Even if you received as little as $100 from a friend, that qualifies as U.S.-sourced income and can be used to file federal income taxes and apply for an ITIN. However, if your goal is to get an ITIN for anything related to U.S. income, we highly recommend starting a U.S. business—it makes the process smoother and opens more opportunities.

After you provide the required info, our agent completes the W-7 form and sends it to you for signature. Once we receive your signed form at our Pakistan office, we ship it to the IRS via DHL Express. The current IRS processing time is 6–12 weeks and, in rare cases, it may take up to 14 weeks, depending on IRS workload and delivery.

No. We as an IRS-authorized Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA), we verify your documents for you—so you don’t have to mail your original passport or ID to the IRS. Only certified copies (issued by the agency that provided the original) are required, or you may use our in-house verification to avoid sending originals.

For your ITIN application, you must submit certified copies of the required documents. These copies are obtained directly from the issuing agency and include a certification seal confirming their accuracy. Some consulates and embassies also offer certified copies—it’s best to contact the relevant consulate or embassy to confirm. Alternatively, you can let us, as your IRS-authorized CAA, handle the verification process and avoid sending original documents.

Yes, the IRS created the ITIN program in 1996 to help foreign nationals report income and pay taxes in the U.S.—this applies even if you are not in the country lawfully. Regardless of your immigration status, if you earn income in the U.S., you are required to report it and pay taxes. The ITIN application provides a way to do that, ensuring compliance with U.S. tax laws.

Yes, an ITIN can expire under certain conditions:
• If it hasn’t been used on a federal tax return at least once in the past three consecutive years.
• If the middle two digits of your ITIN are 70, 71, 72, 78, 79, or 80.
Expired ITINs must be renewed to avoid delays in tax filings or refund claims.

Renewal Process:
Contact us immediately to start the renewal process and ensure there are no delays with your tax filings or refunds. You’ll need to complete a new Form W-7, include supporting documents, and submit it following the same steps as an initial application.

The following ITINs will expire on January 1, 2018:

  • ITINs with middle digits 78 or 79 (e.g., 9NN-78-NNNN). The IRS has sent Letter 5821 to taxpayers with these expiring ITINs.
  • ITINs that were not used on a tax return for Tax Year 2013, Tax Year 2014, or Tax Year 2015.

ITINs that do not have middle digits 78 or 79, and were used on a tax return for Tax Year 2013, Tax Year 2014, or Tax Year 2015, will not expire on January 1, 2018.

Due to U.S. government sanctions, individuals from the following countries are not eligible to apply for an ITIN or form a U.S. company:

  • Burundi
  • Central African Republic
  • Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo
  • Iran
  • Iraq
  • North Korea
  • Liberia
  • Somalia
  • South Sudan
  • Sudan
  • Yemen
  • Zimbabwe
